Polo in Chicago Sand

World-class polo teams competed at North Beach for the Chicago Sand Polo trophy. Sponsored by Qatar Airlines, sand polo uses a shortened field compared to traditional turf and uses three rather than four horses. Tournament lasts through today.

Soul Man, first black DJ in the South

If you’re lucky, every once in a while you can catch and tell a little history.

Early Wright, the “Soul Man,” was quite possibly the first black DJ in the South. From WROX in Clarksdale, Miss., Early Wright helped script the history of blues music in the Mississippi Delta. Friend Kelvin Thomas shot and produced the 11-minute story. I wrote and reported. 1995. If you’d like to use the video, happy to oblige, but please ask permission.

Lake Michigan, it’s what the Windy City sips. One of four city water cribs from which Chicago draws its drinking supply. It’s approximately four miles from shore. crib
